A standout among Avatar: The Last Airbender's top episodes gets its own Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair.
Usually, clip shows are loathed among audiences as an unnecessary time filler, or sometimes tolerated as essential for shows in the age of regular broadcasts. However, this wasn't the situation, and Avatar: The Last Airbender demonstrated this through "The Ember Island Players," a popular segment during its concluding run now being getting a dedicated Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair release.
Highlights about the Secret Lair
The complete Secret Lair superdrop for the forthcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender set was announced recently. This includes five separate collections, and although one titled "My Cabbages!" is certainly humorous tribute to Avatar's best background character, the additional releases appear slightly uninspired, with one notable exception: "The Ember Island Players."
Inspired by installment 17 from season 3 of the beloved series, this special set features the following cards:
- 1x Phantasmal Image as "Absolutely Accurate Actor"
- 1x Braid of Fire
- 1x Cursed Mirror
- 1x Mask of Memory
- 1x Thespian's Stage
What makes this installment stands out
Fans of the show warmly cherish this particular episode, which acted as a review of the hero Aang and his companions' adventure leading up to the conclusion. Different from other recap episodes, or "clip shows," "The Ember Island Players" did not stem due to production constraints or creative challenges. The producers truly wanted to give fans an opportunity to revisit the show's narrative, yet they chose to do it creatively.
Throughout the segment, the crew view a theatrical performance based on their journeys on a stage set on Ember Island, named The Boy in the Iceberg. The play itself is inaccurate, over-the-top, and utterly comical. It excels because it plays with the characters' perception regarding their own identities, juxtaposing them against how the world (and notably the Fire Nation) views them. It has the right amount of introspective humor, and it becomes arguably the finest interpretation of Avatar we have had.
Appeal and pricing
In terms of value, this is a great Secret Lair due to one key factor: Braid of Fire. This specific card is valued between $20 and $40 on online marketplaces as of now, and for $29.99 you can obtain the complete collection, or alternatively $39.99 for the foil version.
Magic: The Gathering's Avatar: The Last Airbender set can be accessed during early access events beginning November 14 and releases worldwide come November 21.
