Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this lovable family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
