Antony Price, Famed for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her American tour following her marriage.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
