Arne Slot Asserts He Feels Safe and Retains Liverpool's Backing After PSV Eindhoven Defeat
The Liverpool head coach conceded that it's natural for doubts to be raised about his position following a further heavy defeat against the Dutch champions.
The Reds endured their 9th defeat in 12 games, representing the club's poorest streak since being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league champions on a difficult night at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, things are alright, I've received plenty of support from management,” the coach commented.
“It would be great to reverse this trend and secure a win of course but if you are in a managerial role and not doing well then it is normal that people question you.”
He continued, “I accept my role. It is not the initial instance I've found myself in a challenging situation but it's crucial that we turned it around.”
Discussions with Liverpool Hierarchy
When asked to provide details on his conversations with the club's leadership, Slot explained:
“We communicate frequently. They assist for the squad and to me and those talks happen but they don’t call me every single minute each day to say they back me.”
He further stated, “Through standard conversations we have I sense the belief. However I haven’t spoken to them since this match so far so let’s see.”
Persistent Issues and Squad Response
Slot expressed regret over recurring shortcomings from his squad in their Champions League loss, namely wasted chances and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more direct in his assessment of the club’s predicament.
“I don’t have the answers. Frankly, I do not. I’m saying that to everybody,” Jones said.
“It's simply unacceptable. I don't have to wait to consider it. I’m past feeling anger inside. I’m at the point currently where I simply lack the phrases.”
He went on, “It's tough because I’m playing for the side I follow. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen this club since I was young.”
“For many years, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team experiencing a phase like this with performances so bad.”
He finished, “However we continue to wear that badge on our shirts. And until that badge is taken away, we’re always going to battle.”
“Our aim is to get this team return to where it needs to be, show everyone once more the values of this club and the reason it's called the best team in the planet.”
“At this moment, we’re in the shit and we have to turn it around.”
