As Beachgoers Ran From Attack, Widely-Shared Image Shows Rescuer Running ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, has always considered the iconic coast as her own backyard. On a recent weekend night, she, along with numerous neighbors, noticed cracking sounds reverberating around the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Stepping out of her apartment, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw made it clear trouble had occurred.

Positioned on the road, speaking to a couple who had rushed up the hill in their swimwear, she heard someone approaching at her rear. This turned out to be a lifeguard, dashing towards Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. It was just him moving in the opposite way that everyone was trying to escape from, and hauling that large equipment and without footwear … He moved into something that undoubtedly every instinct would instruct you to run in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just completely maximum effort running.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery In the Wake of Crisis

The image taken by Ching of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous instances of heroism in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid surf lifesavers, law enforcement and ambulance crews treating many the injured.

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the local authority that hires many permanent beach safety officers, remarked that the crew performed exceptionally from the moment the shooting started right into late that nighttime.

“There have been so many moving accounts, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is remarkable,” stated a local official.
