Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 lives were killed and over 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the events before the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
