The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode series written by the show's creator starts production in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and became a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
