The Mayor-Elect confirms he will make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue during his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors after the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central issue, did not confirm this decision promptly after his victory in November.
"This decision rested on our family's safety and the imperative to focusing my complete efforts on implementing the platform on affordability New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani said on Monday.
Leaving Astoria
He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community known for its abundance of immigrant communities and global cuisine.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and my work," he affirmed.
Political Debate
In his election campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
However his opponents, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.
A House Not Always Used
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it should be a venue for civic gatherings, and advocated for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings a stark contrast to his modest Astoria home.
With its pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished consistent with the home's historical period.
The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
His former home is under rent control, a policy where the city sets limits on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
Tenants see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses exceeds what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
