Citizens have assembled across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.

The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel reacted by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The bloodthirsty opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled state memorials until 16 October - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the relatives of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast on Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was held across the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives met in the North African Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a second day of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the agreement.

A prominent Palestinian official familiar with the discussions indicated that an evening round of negotiations began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative said the earlier meeting concluded without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not restart combat after the opening period of the agreement.

He added that the discussions are "challenging and have still not deliver any major advancement," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Critical Points in Negotiations

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The swap of the captives still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • After-conflict management of the territory

Civilian Feeling

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, young a woman - whose brother survived the attack on the outdoor event, where many attendees were killed and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location seems like home anymore and until each abducted person come back no one will have peace of mind."

"When we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to heal," she added.

Outside the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel says 48 continue in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Activist Atalia Regev explained: "We must do any agreement required for the captives to come back home. But we really want promises that we will be safe."

Surveys now regularly indicate that about 70% of Israeli citizens want the conflict to end in as payment for the liberation of the hostages.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the area of Nova festival, grieving people assembled to pay their respects.

From that location, the sound of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli shelling carried on.

In Gaza City, bombardments were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side area of the community, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"As the evening arrives, the fear appears with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing earlier, shared.

"We are fearful of the air strikes. During nighttime we are resting together, holding each other, notably my little child who puts his face on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we check the news to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."

Medical Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had accepted the remains of half dozen people by the afternoon, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part area.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of the city indicated two more dead people had been transported. One of them was lost his life by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the south region, health workers reported.
