UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a girl harboring several human souls within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, though additional clips show the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic revolves around managing the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls claims that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one remaining might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
